Construction on the Oxford Square is changing the daily experience for businesses, residents and visitors in one of the city’s busiest areas. The Square is a major commercial center, with restaurants, boutiques, bookstores, coffee shops and other locally owned businesses attracting customers throughout the week.
Although the project is expected to improve the area in the long term, businesses are facing temporary challenges, including limited accessibility, construction noise, changing traffic patterns and reduced parking. Some business owners worry the disruptions could discourage customers from visiting the Square until the work is complete.
For businesses that rely on foot traffic, even minor disruptions can affect sales and the customer experience.
“The construction has definitely made things more difficult for us, especially when it comes to getting to the business and finding adequate parking,” said Catherine Freeman, employee of I Just Have To Have It.
Employees also are adjusting to changes involving deliveries, parking and daily operations. Some businesses have directed customers to alternate entrances or provided additional information about how to reach them.
Visitors have noticed the changes, too. People who typically spend an afternoon shopping, dining or walking around the Square now must navigate construction areas, temporary barriers and altered sidewalks.
“I understand that construction is necessary, but it can make coming to the Square a little more difficult than it normally is,” said Finn Cooley.
Despite the short-term inconvenience, some business owners and residents believe the improvements will benefit Oxford.
“We’re looking forward to seeing the finished project and what it can do for the Square once everything is completed,” said Miss Whitney.
City officials and project leaders have encouraged residents and visitors to continue supporting local businesses during construction.
